Enjoy an afternoon of food, fun and folks on June 10

by Kim Welter

Toledo Join Equality Toledo and the Northwest Ohio Faith Coalition on Sunday, June 10 for an afternoon of food, fun and folks called "Celebrating Our Welcome."

The festivities will be at Trinity Episcopal Church at the corner of Adams and St. Clair in downtown Toledo.

There will be fun things to do all afternoon with games for the children, food for everyone and small group opportunities for adults that will explore educational resources from various faith communities meant to help

churches that are open and affirming, or wanting to become open and affirming.

There will also be displays to browse through including LGBT related material from Barnes and Noble.

The afternoon begins at 2 pm and will end with an energizing spirit-filled ecumenical service at 4 p.m. led by a community choir and featuring Kelly A. O'Connell, rector of St. Marks Episcopal Church as celebrant.

Before and After Stonewall films to be shown in Toledo

by Kim Welter

Toledo-Join Equality Toledo, the American Civil Liberties Union and Equality Ohio for two important documentaries about the history of the LGBT rights movement in the United States.

Both screenings will be at the Sanger Branch Library, 3030 West Central Ave. (near Cricket West shopping center) in Toledo, at 6:30 p.m.

Discussions will follow each film.

On Monday, June 11, the film will be Before Stonewall. New York City's Stonewall Inn is regarded by many as the site where gay and lesbian liberation began, since it was at this bar that drag queens

fought back against police on the night of June 27-28, 1969. This documentary uses extensive archival film, movie clips and personal recollections to construct an audiovisual history of the gay community before the Stonewall riots.

On Wednesday, June 27, the second film will be screened. After Stonewall is a documentary and historical retrospective of the gay rights movement from the 1969 Stonewall riots to the present.

For more information about these showings and discussions, please call 419-244-0045 or go to www.equalitytoledo.org.

Kim Welter is the executive director of Equality Toledo.
